By: Turner Schnee When people are born into a higher class this study shows that they will develop overconfidence in their abilities to accomplish tasks. And when they are compared to people of a lower class this study shows that the people with this overconfidence. This will then be perceived by outside groups as being confident. This study took place over 4 different experiments that all were designed to achieve the same thing which is does being higher class come with overconfidence. The first experiment took place in Mexico and the experiments used 150,000 small business owners who were all applying for a loan. These businesses owners were asked to take a memory test. Then after they took the test they were asked to estimate how they think they did compare to other people who took the test. They were also asked to judge where they were in their community whether it be in the middle class or higher or lower. The results showed that they overestimated how they did on the test.
The second experiment took place at the University of Virginia. The test group size was 230 students. They were asked to answer some trivia questions. Then the participants were asked to rank themselves and the results for people who were of a higher class showed that they had overestimated themselves a lot more than how they had actually performed. They overestimated themselves more than the Mexican companies. Then there was a fake job interview where the students were asked the same questions as before and the videos of these students were shown to groups of people. These groups of people decided that the overconfident people were actually the competent ones. image link: https://www.psychologicalscience.org/news/minds-business/why-narcissistic-leaders-are-prone-to-overconfidence.html
