by Morgan Craig-Fraser Why wait dont delay read now! Do you often find yourself getting distracted by getting texts or snapchats while doing your homework? Coming to class without your homework because there was a big game the night before? There may be a different way don't delay! All these things and more can give you a lot of anxiety. It's a term know as procrastination. Procrastination means: the decision not to act. (it means you purposely put off the assignment) you "forgot." (we all know what I'm talking about. What I'm referring to is procrastination in the high school and college years. It can be broken down into different categories like social, school, checking account, and being on time for a job. Procrastination has been studied fro example they examined people using an MRI magnetic resonance imaging basically what the study found was certain people with a link between the amount of anxiety or lack of emotions about negative actions (ie putting things off) could be seen on the MRI in the amygdala portion of the brain. What does all this mean? It means we have the ability to change our responses and impact our actions retraining our brain. Chronic procrastination can be defined as someone who avoids 4/5 areas on a daily basis and it has a negative impact on their mental and financial health. Procrastinators is someone who has a tendency to put off school work and do other things. It is important to know I'm not referring with anyone who is diagnosed by medical disorders like ADHD and others. I am talking about In terms of every day procrastinators it can be caused by anxiety ie "I can't do this anymore," or lack of confidence (lets face it folks sometimes we feel we aren't good enough to face it.) easily distracted by your phone. Reasons why you could be a procrastinator are depression, (all kidding aside find a friend teacher or someone you can talk to.) depression is when you can't find anything that interests you. The good news! there are definitely ways to change your procrastinating ways! This is not a medical condition it is not part of your personality you are born with. You are most of all not lazy! With help of something called behavioral cognitive therapy. ( in simple terms learning to reteach your brain.) You can learn to complete the tasks at hand and delay other things that you would be rather doing( snapchat, being with friends, watching Netflix, Game of Thrones. Once you begin to apply simple strategies or CBT it has been proven that you can score higher on your SAT scores and studies show you can lessen your stress level and sleepless nights about worrying about your homework. You will feel happier because you will be getting things done earlier and not getting swamped by all the work that you pushed to the last night. Sometimes I dont do any homework and try to do it before class which is not a very good feeling when your trying to cram it all in before class. I sleep easier when I have all my work done.
