by randy miller When it comes to kids and teens and ethics, sometimes it can lack, it lacks by kids and teens not being able to make ethical decisions or say unethical things. A study was undertaken by the ethics institute at kent place school to teach ethics to primary and secondary students. The basic idea of the study was to teach kids “ how to live in the world”. The study was done by giving students in almost all grades scenarios that had unethical situations. Such scenarios varied, they go from people walking into coffee shops wearing swastika’s, to people getting uninvited to birthday parties then seeing photos of the party on social media. These tests were given to students once a month or weekly in there home room classes. They started by giving the students the ethics institution steps for making decisions, study and understand the situation, identify the values involved on all sides, identify the ethical dilemma right vs. right, identify values that influence your position, find an ethical answer that effectively and respectfully demonstrates the ability to apply facts, identify values, and can refer to other sources. Using these steps the students are able to read the situations then make the decision on what to do. When it comes to values the students were told about honesty, trustworthiness, integrity, promise keeping, accountability, loyalty, justice, autonomy, privacy, safety, security, equality, fairness, respect, responsibility, service, compassion, friendship, independence, authenticity. They used these values and the steps to try and decide the best outcome. The study on its own was a huge success teaching kids how to make ethical decisions and try to put themselves in other people's shoes. The students loved being able to learn how think about the other person and how because of whatever the situation is being able to think about the other person and what they might be going through or what impact the situation might have on them. Teaching ethics doesn't just teach the kids how say ethical things but also do ethical things such as helping an elderly person across the street or taking out the trash when not even asked to do so. Students who did the study were also found to have to more open ended conversations with there peers, parents, and even staff members. They were able to not feel like they have to hide what's on there minds and able to say what they think, feel, or need to let go of. It helped students learn that it's ok to talk about things if they want to even if they don't know how to. They were able to decipher ways to talk about certain things and figure out how to say them. Teaching kids how to ethical doesn't always come natural, some don't even know what the word ethical means and like many other things practice makes perfect. It really all comes down to being a good person and having good morals. The study conducted by kent place school has shown more than enough evidence to prove that teaching younger kids ethics works.
